Upon graduation from college with a business degree, John Issel is promptly hired by Helmes's company I.N.C. At INC, the one who gets ahead, does it by kissing ass, or over someone else's dead body. John keeps getting promotions, but cant figure out why. Actually management doesn't care about him, they hope that having hired him, his father, Senator Issel, will vote the way they like.

У 1942 р. радянський підводний човен під командуванням Пилипа Івановича Логінова (капітан III рангу) непоміченим проник у бухту Багряну, захоплену противником. Потопивши торпедами транспорт водотоннажністю близько 6 тисяч тонн, субмарина загинула. Через 40 років командування ВМФ проводить навчання. Командиру субмарини Миколі Логінову, сину загиблого батька-підводника, а також командирові великого протичовнового корабля Сергієві Золотницькому, його другу, поставлені завдання: ставши умовними супротивниками, не дати виявити себе, знайти противника та "знищити" його. Під час навчань корабель Золотницького, потрапивши в рибальські сіті, став нерухомою мішенню. Не бажаючи легкої перемоги, Логінов не «знищив» супротивника з вигідної позиції. Як тільки командирові протичовнового корабля вдалося виявити субмарину, він атакував і «потопив» ціль. …
