Дія відбувається в світі, аналогічному сучасній Японії. Центральний персонаж аніме та манґи — Куросакі Ічіґо, рудоволосий п'ятнадцятирічний школяр, здатний з дитинства спілкуватися з духами та привидами, невидимими для звичайних людей. Одного разу з ним стикається дівчина — шініґамі (дослівно «бог смерті») Кучікі Рукіа, яка полювала на злого духа («порожнього»). У битві з порожнім вона отримує поранення та вимушена передати свої здібності Ічіґо Куросакі. В результаті Ічіґо сам стає шініґамі, а Рукіа позбавляється більшої частини сили.
