ХІХ століття – епоха доленосних відкриттів та винаходів. Безстрашний пілот Амелія Рен (Фелісіті Джонс) та вчений Джеймс Глейшер (Едді Редмейн) відправляються у подорож на повітряній кулі. Ані до того, ані після ніхто з людей не зміг піднятися у такий спосіб настільки високо. У верхніх шарах атмосфери Амелія та Джеймс роблять чимало важливих для науки відкриттів. Та аби мати змогу поділитися цим зі світом їм потрібно вдало повернутися на землю, а це не так просто, як хотілося б.Пригодницька драма «Аеронавти» описує політ на повітряній кулі, якій дійсно відбувся 5 вересня 1862 року. Насправді, у літальному пристрої піднялися в повітря Джеймс Глейшер разом з Генрі Коксвеллом, якого замінили вигаданим жіночим персонажем, у якому поєднали риси одразу кількох реальних жінок, що захоплювались польотами. Серед прототипів головної героїні Софі Бланшар, Маргарет Грем та Амелі Ерхарт. Кожна жінка зробила вагомий внесок у розвиток галузі.
