Напередодні Різдва у Лос-Анджелесі, в автотроші гине власник похоронного бюро "Фішер і сини" Нетаніел Фішер. Його старшому синові Нейту, який повернувся додому після довгої відсутності, доведеться не тільки поховати батька, але й розібратися з проблемами інших членів своєї дивної родини: нерішучої на вигляд матері на ім'я Рут, прихованого гомосексуаліста – брата Дейвіда і сестри старшокласниці Клер."Світло у віконці" для Нейта – ексцентрична Бренда, з якою він познайомився в літаку. Після оголошення заповіту, брати отримують у спадок похоронний бізнес. Відтепер вони щодня матимуть справу з найспокійнішими клієнтами у світі.
