Мікки Рурк у ролі Генрі – хронічного алкоголіка, покидька суспільства і одночасно талановитого письменника, який заробляє на кусень хліба і склянку пійла своїми кулаками.Він бере участь в усіх бійках, його б'ють до напівсмерті, його обличчя нагадує відбивну, але на нього роблять ставки і він ніколи не здається.
Брудний гультяй з поганим характером, такій людині не легко знайти супутницю життя, але одного разу він зустрічає жінку на ім'я Ванда (Фей Данавей), яка виявляє до нього цікавість.
