Під час Культурної революції молодого чоловіка відправляють у віддалене село працювати вчителем, хоча він сам має обмежену освіту. Зіткнувшись із суворою системою зубріння та відсутністю книжок, він поступово змінює підхід до навчання. Він заохочує дітей писати про власне життя, відкривати свої думки й почуття.
