Перша екранізація біографії Тараса Шевченка. На момент створення фільм був однією з найдорожчих постановок: уперше для підготовки до фільмування були залучені спеціалісти з історії, етнографії, літературознавства. Художнє оформлення фільму створив видатний художник-модерніст академік Василь Кричевський, фільм консультував професор Сергій Єфремов.Складений з багатьох новел фільм, що ілюструє життя Шевченка-юнака, солдата, поета, з успіхом ішов в Україні та закордоном і став найуспішнішим кінопроєктом 1926 року. Роль Тараса Шевченка у фільмі виконав Амвросій Бучма.
Демонструвався також скорочений варіант фільму під назвою “Тарасове життя” (“Маленький Тарас”), створений Чардиніним у співавторстві з дружиною Маргаритою Барською-Чардиніною й орієнтований на дитячу аудиторію.
