Мешканці гірського села у Непалі живуть з того, що вирощують яків і перевозять ними сіль на рівнини, де обмінюють свій товар на пшеницю. Такі собі азійські чумаки. Праця їхня важка та небезпечна, вони часто гинуть... Одного разу, молодий ватажок Лакпа розбивається насмерть у горах. Батько загиблого, старий Тінле, не вірить у нещасний випадок і підозрює у вбивстві іншого погонича, Карму, який буцімто хотів стати ватажком. Жодна людина в селі не підтримує цю версію, але впертий дідуган ніяк не може вгамуватися. Не зважаючи на солідний вік, Тінле вирішує сам повести яків з вантажем солі через гори. Але Карма не менш впертий і веде свою власну валку за участі молодшого покоління селян.
