Екранізація одноіменного роману Еміля Золя. Ніколя Саккар — відомий паризький банкір та фінансист з сумнівною репутацією. Після невдалої спроби капіталізації своєї дочірньої компанії, Саккар знаходиться на межі банкрутства. Щоб врятувати ситуацію, він збирається профінансувати рекордний трансатлантичний політ авіатора Жака Амлена, вважаючи, що увага до цієї події підвищить вартість акцій його банку без залучення справжніх інвестицій. Використовуючи неправдиві звіти про політ, фінансист маніпулює ціною акцій на біржі, а також починає шантажувати дружину Амлена, — Лів, щоб змусити її стати його коханкою.
