Дія фільму відбувається в серпні 1944 у Парижі. Містом поки ще володіють нацисти, але загони союзників вже знаходяться на підступах до нього. За наказом Гітлера, під час відступу значна частина міських будівель, включаючи основні визначні пам'ятки міста, повинні бути підірвані. Виконання цього плану покладено на німецького коменданта Парижа генерала Дітріха фон Гольтіца. Сапери закладають вибухівку під зазначеними об'єктами, всі чекають наказу коменданта про підрив. Використовуючи потаємний хід, у кімнату фон Гольтіца в готелі «Ле Меріс», розташованому на вулиці Ріволі, вдається проникнути шведському дипломату Раулю Нордлінґу, який намагається переконати генерала зберегти Париж для майбутніх поколінь.
