Літо 1948 року, ділянка чехословацько-німецького кордону в Шумаві. Цей гірський район дав притулок тим, хто схотів покинути країну. Але мало кому були відомі таємні стежки, що ведуть на захід. Одного з них звуть «Король Шумави».Ця таємнича людина стала постійним «головним болем» для чехословацьких прикордонників. І ось сержант Земан, що тільки-но з'явився на заставі, вирішує його схопити і дізнатися таємницю «Короля»...

As a young actor František Lukávec and his teacher Vladimir Tuma became enemies. František insisted that Tuma was dismissed from the school as a reactionary and hostile to the new government. Many years passed, and here they met again on the stage of a theater. František is assigned the role of Julius Fucik, Tuma plays the role of a Gestapo man in the same play. In the course of the action, the Gestapo man beats Fucik. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Tuma beats up his old enemy during the dress rehearsal. Frantisek's face is bleeding, but he will still play. The rehearsal continues...

The growing conflict between the unruly owner of the villa and his lodger ends up in court. The cohabitation ends in bodily harm - and the film actually translates two versions of the same events, as seen by each of the parties involved. However, the attempt at morality, which proclaimed the necessity of removing the old survivals in people's thinking, did not quite work, and the testimony presented is at times a bit stiff.

In the early days of the lull, someone sadly recalls a pre-war life; someone unexpectedly meets his love; someone is returning from enemy dungeons looking hopefully into the future; and someone, having moved from a tank into a Czech tram, warmly recalls his craft as a car driver... These days, all those who survived the Great War fire swear an oath to keep peace on Earth forever, honoring the memory of those who gave their lives for simple human happiness.

The plot of the film follows a bus ride on the Prague - Karlovy Vary route and the actions of the people on it. A diverse group of people with various interests, professions and personalities gathered on the bus. Their encounter in the close environment of the bus gave the opportunity to create a whole series of good humorous situations. The ride on the express bus is a symbolic example of the contemporary life of our society, in which, just like when riding a bus, it is necessary to suppress many private interests and selfish qualities in order to successfully reach the destination.

And with the style of WEST SIDE STORY, puts music, color and emotion surrounding the born of a mate, first love in a youngs school, quite outdated and square. The movie ends better than "WEST SIDE" and even better than the sad czechoslovakian story. The scenes of the hops harvest to make the famous czech beer, the sky ever blue and all the conflict and debate that emerge in the czech society and inside of each member of the school, could have found an answer, flowering a little late in the so called czech spring.
