Весна 1945 року в маленькому курортному містечку на Балтійському морі. Ґюнтеру 16 років, і він твердо вірить, що німці виграють війну. Під час полювання на тікаючих підневільних робітників, Ґюнтер ловить його та спостерігає, як його розстрілюють. Він з гордістю приймає нагороду Залізний хрест, перш ніж його відправляють на сусідній фронт у складі останнього контингенту військ. Його швидко захоплюють радянські солдати, але йому вдається втекти та повернутися додому. Коли місто окупує Червона Армія, Ґюнтера заарештовують за вбивство підневільного робітника.Фільм заборонили у 1968 році, ще до його завершення, а значну частину негативу пізніше знищили.
