Друга Світова Війна. Гавайські острови. Японці після нападу на Перл-Харбор продовжують методично знищувати флот США. Черговий американський підводний човен потопили японським есмінцем, капітан Річардсон дивом залишився в живих і списаний на берег. Він жадає помститися ворогам за загибель своєї субмарини, і така можливість йому надана командуванням, адже тільки він знає все глибини в цьому квадраті. Адмірал флоту призначає його шкіпером - капітаном на субмарину «Нерка», але команда не рада такому начальству, адже матроси вже вибрали собі капітаном Джима Бледсо. На борту починається психологічне протистояння. Новий капітан щодня проводить тактичні навчання по швидкому зануренню, від яких команда не в захваті, але ці навчальні маневри згодом дадуть величезні переваги в підводній війні і приведуть екіпаж до перемоги над ворогом...
