With its profusion of desire and superabundance of information, our age couldn't be more different... DREAMS REWIRED offers another perspective. A montage of films from the 1880s to the 1930s, many rare and previously unscreened, it traces contemporary appetites and anxieties back to the birth of the telephone, television and cinema. Its claim: that the social convulsions of today's hyper-mediated world were already prefigured over 100 years ago, during the electric media boom of the late 19th century. Early electric media were as revolutionary as social media are now. They sparked a fervent utopianism in the public imagination; promising total communication, the annihilation of distance, an end to war. The technologies were to serve everyone, not just the elites. Through strengthening human relationships, increasing efficiency, and predicting the future, it would become possible to build a new world for all to share. But what these media initially promised, and what they eventually delivered was very different. The early radical openness was disciplined and regulated, and two-way, peer-to-peer communication gave way to hierarchical broadcasting. And the fears that had accompanied the hopes - fears of the erosion of privacy, of ubiquitous surveillance, of financial exposure and moral hazard - began to appear well-founded. DREAMS REWIRED is an assemblage of clips from nearly 200 films, ranging from the earliest dramatic works to music hall slapstick, newsreels, marketing materials, recordings of scientific experiments, and artistic adventures with film as medium. Through years of research in archives around the world, the directors have unearthed material that is by turns hilarious, revelatory, aesthetically striking, and astonishingly prescient. This footage is spliced together with a commentary on our contemporary predicament (voiced by Tilda Swinton) that, rather than plunging the audience into the past, pulls the historical material into the present. «Майдан» – це стрічка, що заглиблює глядача у вир подій. Залучає до глибої емоційної драми на тлі історії звичайних людей. Про них не довідатися з преси. Це історії, що надихають. Історії молодих людей, які відстоюють власні права, долаючи чисельні перешкоди: від брутального військового режиму, який збирається придушити повстання танками, до корумпованих членів Братів мусульман, що використовують мечеті для маніпулювання електоратом. Активісти у нашому фільмі озброєні лише камерами, соціальними мережами, відео завантаженими на YouTube, а також рішучістю звільнити свій народ. Фільм відзнято у стилі «кіно вар’єте», що надає глядачам деталізований погляд на революцію у самому її серці. Завдяки новітнім технологіям, голос молодих людей неможливо приглушити у цифрову епоху. Наші герої б’ються у віковічній війні модерною зброєю.
Фільм «Майдан» вперше з’явився на екранах у вигляді чорнового монтаж на міжнародному кінофестивалі «Санденс» у січні 2013 року, де отримав Приз глядацьких симпатій у категорії «Міжнародне документальне кіно». У той момент, коли творці фільму отримували нагороду, головні герої продовжували боротьбу на вулицях Єгипту. Тоді перший президент, обраний демократичним шляхом, оголосив про надання собі повноважень, що перевищували ті, які мав щойно повалений диктатор. З огляду на неочікуваний поворот подій, ми знали, що історія матиме продовження. Ми повернулися на вулиці, щоб зафіксувати те, що пізніше увійде до фільм як друга частина – конфлікт із Братами мусульманами та усунення Могамеда Морсі єгипетською армією.
Ми стаємо свідками неймовірної самопожертви героїв фільму на шляху до свободи. Завдяки промовам цих сміливих революціонерів ми розуміємо, чому вони вірять, що варто ризикувати життям та здоров’ям заради ідеалів і майбутнього країни.

Історія революції, прочитана між газетними рядками. Ми спостерігаємо за групою єгипетських активістів з моменту повалення військового диктатора, що правив країною 30 років, у 2011 р., до військового силового усунення президента Єгипту представника Братів мусульман, влітку 2013 р. Герої фільму борються проти лідерів і режимів. Вони ризикують своїм життям, щоб побудувати нове суспільство, що базується на совісті.Єгипетська революція набирає обертів, неначе карусель. Із новин ми отримуємо лише побіжний огляд найважливіших подій – виборів чи маршу мільйонів. На початку серпня 2013 р. ми спостерігали за тим, як вже другого президента усували від влади за попередні три роки.
«Майдан» – це стрічка, що заглиблює глядача у вир подій. Залучає до глибої емоційної драми на тлі історії звичайних людей. Про них не довідатися з преси. Це історії, що надихають. Історії молодих людей, які відстоюють власні права, долаючи чисельні перешкоди: від брутального військового режиму, який збирається придушити повстання танками, до корумпованих членів Братів мусульман, що використовують мечеті для маніпулювання електоратом. Активісти у нашому фільмі озброєні лише камерами, соціальними мережами, відео завантаженими на YouTube, а також рішучістю звільнити свій народ. Фільм відзнято у стилі «кіно вар’єте», що надає глядачам деталізований погляд на революцію у самому її серці. Завдяки новітнім технологіям, голос молодих людей неможливо приглушити у цифрову епоху. Наші герої б’ються у віковічній війні модерною зброєю.
Фільм «Майдан» вперше з’явився на екранах у вигляді чорнового монтаж на міжнародному кінофестивалі «Санденс» у січні 2013 року, де отримав Приз глядацьких симпатій у категорії «Міжнародне документальне кіно». У той момент, коли творці фільму отримували нагороду, головні герої продовжували боротьбу на вулицях Єгипту. Тоді перший президент, обраний демократичним шляхом, оголосив про надання собі повноважень, що перевищували ті, які мав щойно повалений диктатор. З огляду на неочікуваний поворот подій, ми знали, що історія матиме продовження. Ми повернулися на вулиці, щоб зафіксувати те, що пізніше увійде до фільм як друга частина – конфлікт із Братами мусульманами та усунення Могамеда Морсі єгипетською армією.
Ми стаємо свідками неймовірної самопожертви героїв фільму на шляху до свободи. Завдяки промовам цих сміливих революціонерів ми розуміємо, чому вони вірять, що варто ризикувати життям та здоров’ям заради ідеалів і майбутнього країни.
