Після року ув’язнення його було засуджено до 20 років колонії – попри те, що свідоцтва з боку звинувачення були надані під тиском, а докази у справі – відсутні. Олег Сенцов своєї провини не визнає. Режисер фільму Аскольд Куров стежить за процесом суду і спробами сім’ї Олега, його друзів та адвокатів звільнити режисера з в’язниці. Прикрий процес викликав протести по всьому світу: Європейська кіноакадемія і низка всесвітньо відомих кінематографістів – Педро Альмодовар, Вім Вендерс, Агнешка Голланд, Кен Лоуч, Джонні Депп та інші – закликали звільнити Сенцова.
