A Jewish Moroccan immigrant family living in Israel is nearly destroyed by conflicts resulting from generational differences in this arresting Israeli drama. It begins as Cheli, a successful but emotionally troubled talk show host who has been unable to deal with her traumatic childhood is traveling to attend her father's funeral. She is accompanied by her mentally ill sister Pnina and her adopted estranged daughter. It is a hellish trip and as they travel, flashbacks chronicle their painful youth. Rachel had always wanted to break away from her family's Moroccan heritage and so spent much time trying make herself fit in with her Israeli peers. She was humiliated by her poor, ignorant family. Her father was an overbearing, blindly religious fanatic and their mother was a witch who manipulated the family by casting spells. She feared her mother, and despised her insane sister, to whom she was very cruel.

Israeli Rachel Gerlik has been widowed for one year. Despite not ever having loved her husband, she feels she now needs to move on with her life. She plans to sell his car, which has not been touched in that year. She starts dating again, solely on blind dates set up by her friend Shula Kupfer, first with the insecure Yossi Moraly and then with renowned cantor Moshe Weinstock. Most importantly in Rachel's plan is to be accepted into the founding group of a new ideologically-based West Bank settlement yet to be built, the acceptance committee chaired by Shula's husband, Motkeh Kupfer, considered one of the most important figures in religious Zionism. On the far side of middle age, business owner Vlada and his wife Milena live an upper middle class lifestyle outside of Belgrade. Without really thinking about it as they go about their day-to-day business, they are dedicated to protecting that comfortable life they've eked out for themselves and their now young adult to teenaged children, Natasha, Milos and Katarina. There is some friction between Vlada and Natasha for her anti-Serbian stance due to the atrocities exacted by the government during the Balkan War, she having written an award winning essay on the subject. Many Balkans, including Serbians, are calling for those who committed war crimes to be prosecuted. The reason for Vlada's pro-Serbian stance is that he was a soldier fighting for the Serbs during the war, he and Milena who still have among their social circle some of Vlada's fellow ex-soldiers and their now spouses and partners. Upon a visit to her physician, Milena learns that she has a lump in her left breast, she never having done a mammogram. As she contemplates her health and waits to get the lump checked out, she decides not to say anything to her family. Concurrently as she does a major cleaning of the house, Milena finds conclusive evidence that Vlada did commit war crimes when he was a soldier. These two events quietly rock Milena's rather staid world. What she decides to do about her life is affected by the eventual diagnosis regarding the lump and her and Vlada's friendships within that specific social circle.

Yitzhak runs the turkey farm his father built with his own two hands after they emigrated from Iran to Israel. When his son Moti turns thirteen, Yitzhak teaches him the trade, hoping that he will continue the proud family tradition. But Moti doesn't like working in the turkey barn; his passion is fixing up junkyard cars and bringing them back to life. Moti's mother Sarah tries to reconcile between the two, while his grandfather pushes Yitzhak to take a firm hand with his son. Yitzhak takes Moti's refusal to work in the turkey barn as a personal rejection. Though he loves his son dearly, he makes it his mission to impose the family farm on Moti.
