У монтажному фільмі «Тлумачення сновидінь» режисер Андрій Загданський пропонує передивитися кінохроніку подій першої половини ХХ століття як нав’язливий сон. Більше того – витлумачити цей сон, його символи і рушійні сили в діалозі з засновником психоаналізу – Зиґмундом Фройдом. Революція, солідарність трудящих, етнічна і класова нетерпимість, масові рухи, колективна агресія, диктатура – режисер намагається знайти пояснення цим важливим для історії ХХ сторіччя явищам в психоаналітичній теорії. Не випадково роки кінохроніки обмежуються двома важливими датами – 1896 і 1939 роками і відображають події, сучасником яких був Зиґмунд Фройд. У 1896 році Фройд розпочав роботу над своїм першим фундаментальним текстом «Тлумачення сновидінь», де він винайшов поняття «несвідоме», а брати Люм’єри продемонстрували свій перший фільм і, як вважається, винайшли кіно. У вересні 1939 року Фройд помер у Лондоні, куди він переїхав з Відня після аншлюсу Австрії нацистською Німеччиною, цього ж місяця розпочалася Друга світова війна.
Сюжет
У монтажному фільмі «Тлумачення сновидінь» режисер Андрій Загданський пропонує передивитися кінохроніку подій першої половини ХХ століття як нав’язливий сон. The distinct visual appearance that Sellars lent to the opera, where video monitors with powerful images are used as a sort of high-tech metaphor for a cathedral's stained glass, drew critical acclaim and is still talked about as a watershed moment in opera to this day. This film here is a 75-minute documentary on the 1992 staging. Jean-Pierre Gorin filmed Sellars, baritone José van Dam (St. Francis) soprano Dawn Upshaw (The Angel), and the LA Philharmonic and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen as they rehearsed for the big day. There are interviews with these artists, though Sellars gets most of the screen time. The documentary is very much about Sellars' vision for Messiaen's theatrical drama. Very little is said about Messiaen's music.
