For residents on the idyllic South Seas island of Pago Pago, life is simple until a boat arrives carrying two couples, the Davidsons (who are missionaries), the MacPhails and a prostitute named Sadie Thompson. Davidson is more than just a religious zealot; he's a mad man. When the boat, which was en route to another port, is temporarily stranded on the island due to a possible Cholera outbreak on-board, Sadie spends her time "partying" with the American soldiers stationed on the island. Her behavior, however, is more than the Davidsons can stand and soon Mr. Davidson confronts Sadie about her evil ways and offers salvation. When Sadie rebels and the attempted redemption does not go as planned, Davidson arranges to have her sent back to San Francisco, where she fled some years ago due to mysterious personal issues. Davidson soon becomes unhinged and thus begins a series of surprising events which culminate in disaster.

Many passengers on the Shanghai Express are more concerned that the notorious Shanghai Lil is on board than the fact that a civil war is going on that may make the trip take more than three days. The British Army doctor, Donald Harvey, knew Lil before she became a famous "coaster." A fellow passenger defines a coaster as "a woman who lives by her wits along the China coast." When Chinese guerillas stop the train, Dr. Harvey is selected as the hostage. Lil saves him, but can she make him believe that she really hasn't changed from the woman he loved five years before?

Julius Schmitke is a fifty-seven-year-old German wind turbine engineer. He feels ill and his body creaks, crunches and groans with age. One day, he is sent somewhere to the Czech side of the Ore Mountains to fix one of his old model, a C 174 turbine that, mysteriously, will not stop creaking and squeaking, just like his own body does. But this is not the only mystery that awaits him. His colleague disappears, strange things happen, and Schmitke starts to "feel" the spirit of the forest around him. The longer Julius wanders around the harsh and misty mountains, the more it surprises him that this entire expedition into the ominous and unknown jungle seems to be a return to old, familiar places within himself.Сюжет (англ.)
