Торговець ножами Гіл Сартейн (Де Ніро) майже одночасно втрачає роботу, сім’ю і право бачитись зі своєю дитиною. Єдине, що у нього залишається, - це фанатична пристрасть до бейсболу і улюбленого гравця Боббі Рейнборна (Снайпс). Поступово це захоплення трансформується у нав’язливу ідею, і коли Рейнборн починає зазнавати невдач у спорті, Сартейн починає допомагати кумиру, вбиваючи його суперників... Тема картини – стосунки кумира і шанувальника – не нова для жанру трилера, варто згадати хоча б “Мізері”. Не була новою вона і для Де Ніро, який розіграв її у чудовому фільмі Скорсезе “Король комедії”. Крім цього, очевидна паралель з “Таксистом”, де той самий Де Ніро намагається вбити відомого політика, розчарувавшись в його обіцянках (і непоганий приклад, до речі...). Однак творцям “Фанату” вдалося знайти для теми власний погляд, а Де Ніро створив новий цікавий образ, не побоявшись максимально загострити кути у стосунках героя з навколишнім світом.
