Головний герой цієї картини на ім’я Крісті є поліцейським, що він відмовляється від арешту хлопця, який, за інформацією, запропонував шкільним приятелям гашиш. Крісті вважає, що закон, так чи так, незабаром зміниться, і він не хоче ламати життя безвідповідальному підлітку, не хоче цим обтяжувати свою совість. Але для начальника Крісті слово «совість» має зовсім інше значення…Для головного героя, поліцейського, совість – це щось усередині людини, вона перешкоджає робити щось погане, таке, про що шкодуватимеш. На це начальник відповідає тим, що розігрує майже цирковий номер із читанням тлумачного словника. Словник, як і закон, ніби дає досить прозорі відповіді, але життя є складнішим.

It's the 22nd of December. Sixteen years have passed since the revolution, and in a small town Christmas is about to come. Piscoci, an old retired man is preparing for another Christmas alone. Manescu, the history teacher, tries to keep up with his debts. Jderescu, the owner of a local television post, seems not to be so interested in the upcoming holidays. For him, the time to face history has come. Sandu Patrascu is an ordinary Romanian citizen, living in a comfortable apartment in Bucharest. He has a good job (in the vehicle registration business), a wife (no-nonsense Olga), a teenage son (computer-obsessed Matei) and a (trained) dog. On the whole, he feels good about himself. One day though, he gets upset by an incident he is the witness of: a violent quarrel taking place on the other side of a female neighbor's door. Worse, Vali, another neighbor, leaves the apartment while Sandu stands in the staircase listening. Even worse, Laura, the young woman he has heard shouting is found murdered. What will Patrascu do under such circumstances ?
