Віз, повна бродячих комедіантів, мандрує по Європі, яка представляла собою в той час село, що розкинулася в нескінченність, що стала жертвою чуми, голоду, державних і релігійних воєн. Населення придушене убогістю і уражено сліпотою забобонів. Аристократія намагається повернути собі старі привілеї і продемонструвати свої багатства, часто неіснуючі. Щастя буває рідкісним, перспектива життя - неясна. Комедіанти в свої поневіряння долають труднощі, щось втрачають, щось знаходять. Ці пригоди є історією епохи, яка шукає свій шлях і винаходить нові моделі буття.
Сюжет
За мотивами знаменитого пригодницького роману Теофілла Готьє "Капітан Фракасс". Подорож відбувається в XVII столітті.
