Michael Logan is a police detective in London. His area is drugs and this brings him into contact with European drug syndicates. Logan is happy to turn a blind eye to their dealings, for a cut, or confiscate suppliers' merchandise for their own profit. So far he and his equally-crooked police colleagues have done quite well out of this. Then a deal he was planning with a member of a Turkish drug cartel goes sour and the balance of power swings to an Albanian gang, run by two brothers, the Kabashis. Logan quickly aims to provide the Albanians with the same service he provided the Turks, but they aren't easily lead. Meanwhile, he an his colleagues are being investigated by Internal Affairs. The tale revolves around Mae and Jack, accomplices in the distribution of marijuana, who manage to entice the local high school kids to stop by Mae's apartment to smoke reefer. The lives of all who are involved with this menace are inevitably shattered. One man becomes so addicted to the killer weed that the guilt over framing a teen for murder causes a judge to order him to be committed for life to a mental hospital! Dr. Carroll closes by advising us to not incur the same tragedy.

But during a period of extended non-contact due to Beth's vacation during the summer, Alice finds herself in the company of the "in" crowd, including a college boy named Richie who becomes her boyfriend. They introduce her to drugs, which she likes as they make her feel less inhibited. She becomes addicted, taking uppers to cope with the downs associated with dealing with her parents, and downers to get off the drug induced highs. She abandons Beth, and continues her drug use as she begins to feel that is the only time she now feels happy, with all of them starting to push in order to keep their heads above the surface financially. When Alice realizes the downward spiral she is in, she doesn't know how to get herself out of it. Alice eventually gets help from a priest, from a psychiatrist, and from her parents, who had always trusted her, who were initially oblivious to what she was doing, and who want to support her in the best way they think they can.
