Окрім метисів та індіанців, в селі влаштувався білий набрід: пройдисвіти і бродяги усіх мастей. Немає серйозної роботи, немає грошей, щоб звідси поїхати. Усім заправляє американська нафтова компанія, єдине велике підприємство в регіоні.Головний герой — Маріо (Ів Монтан), чоловік 30 років, безробітний. Єдина цінність у його будинку — квиток паризького метрополітену, що дбайливо зберігається під склом. Його сусід Луїджі — «типовий італієць», працює на будівництві. Лікарі повідомляють Луїджі, що якщо він не змінить клімату й роботу, то його чекає неминуча смерть: в його легенях величезна кількість цементного пилу. У місто приїжджає колишній гангстер Джо, що купив «квиток за п'ятдесят доларів», навіть не запитуючи пункту призначення. Він зав'язує дружбу з Маріо. Майже відразу Джо розуміє, що потрапив в діру, покинути яку можна лише дивом.Перші сорок хвилин фільму герої переважно знайомляться між собою, нидіють неробством і провокують один одного на бійки. Проте монотонна течія стрічки різко змінюється при першій згадці нітрогліцерину. Сталася катастрофа: одна з далеких бурових злетіла у повітря. Загинули люди. Загасити велетенський факел, що реве, можна тільки спрямованим вибухом. Нафтова компанія пропонує роботу для чотирьох добровольців: доставити дві вантажівки на аварійну свердловину. На старих вантажівках поганими дорогами належить везти рідкий нітрогліцерин в каністрах: один поштовх — і на місці вибуху залишиться тільки величезна яма.
