Усім заправляє американська нафтова компанія, єдине велике підприємство в регіоні.Головний герой — Маріо (Ів Монтан), чоловік 30 років, безробітний. Єдина цінність у його будинку — квиток паризького метрополітену, що дбайливо зберігається під склом. Його сусід Луїджі — «типовий італієць», працює на будівництві. Лікарі повідомляють Луїджі, що якщо він не змінить клімату й роботу, то його чекає неминуча смерть: в його легенях величезна кількість цементного пилу. У місто приїжджає колишній гангстер Джо, що купив «квиток за п'ятдесят доларів», навіть не запитуючи пункту призначення. Він зав'язує дружбу з Маріо.
