Привиди Нью-Йорка - могутні монстри, що виростають до розмірів хмарочоса, змінюють форму, просочуються крізь стіни і люки міської каналізації, і трощать все навколо, як Годзілла. Причому звичайними засобами впоратися з ними неможливо: Ні танк, ні автомат, ні гранатомет не візьме монстра.
Відомий учений, доктор Ігон Спенглер, всю свою наукову кар'єру присвятив вивченню привидів. Ігон Спенглер зробив цілий ряд важливих наукових відкриттів: він довів, що кожен привид поширює ектоплазменное випромінювання, за яким його легко знайти. На основі своєї теорії доктор Спенглер створив детектори привидів, бластери, і організував перший загін мисливців за привидами.
Новий загін мисливців за привидами сформований з кращих студентів Ігона Спенглер, а Ігон залишається їхнім керівником, відправляючи дітей на чергове завдання.
