Карабахський правитель кінця XVIII — початку XIX століття Ібрагим хан, щоб об'єднати своє ослаблене економічно від воєн і страждаюче від феодальної роз'єднаності володіння і захистити його від експансії з боку Ірану, приймає мудре, самовіддане і трагічне рішення. Воно ще раз доводить, що, на жаль, «не всі можуть королі» і що доля будь-якого правителя - заручниця країни, якою даний правитель володіє. Ібрагим хан, щоб зберегти незалежність Карабаху для майбутніх поколінь, погоджується на пропозицію правителя Ірану Фаталі шаху врегулювати питання династичним браком. І видає за нього заміж свою дочку, Агабейім ага. Та, будучи закоханою в Садай бека, карабахського візиря, проте розуміє, що і вона не вольна в своєму виборі і повинна принести своє щастя в жертву Батьківщині, її майбутньому.
