Сюжет цього фільму ґрунтується на основі книжки Пола Брікгілла, що та, своєю чергою, заснована на реальних подіях: американські, британські й канадські військовополонені здійснюють масову втечу з німецького табору під час Другої світової війни.На самому початку стрічки глядачеві саме й повідомляється про документальність зафільмованих подій. І хоча деякі персонажі й увібрали в себе риси багатьох людей, а час і місце дії дещо узагальнені, сама втеча показана саме так, як вона відбувалася насправді, аж до найменших деталей…
І, треба сказати, що це підтвердили учасники тих далеких подій, які 2009 року прибули на колишнє місце розташування табору, аби відзначити 65-річчя порятунку й передивилися фільм. Це стосується і життя в таборі, і подробиці риття тонелю. Щоправда, один із ветеранів розкритикував актора Стіва Макквіна за ґламуризацію його героя.
