Його характеризують як «funny and disrespectful» — він надихався зовсім непоєднуваними речами: саботажем та традиціями, культурою фетішу, Френсісом Беконом та вівтарями Ренессансу. Правдиво і нешаблонно він перекладав свої емоції на мову одягу. «Якщо хочете пізнати мене, подивіться на мої роботи» — казав Лі.Але у блискучої кар’єри завжди є і темний бік. Втома, втрата матері та Ізабелли Блоу (саме вона порадила взяти йому псевдонім Александр) приводять Лі до самотності. Він шукає порятунку в кокаїні та ліпосакції, але це не допомагає. 11 лютого 2010 року Александр МакКвін покінчив життя самогубством.
