The pony hotel has just been opened, but so far no guests have arrived. Dick gets Ralf to design a brochure about the hotel. The girls and Ethelbert then lead the village children on horseback to Lübeck, where they all distribute the brochure - not knowing that Dalli has added some embellishments to the text. An orphaned boy wins a two week stay at the hotel. Luckily, paying guests are coming now, too. Most important among them is Dr. Westkamp, boss of a travel agency. Unfortunately, he keeps himself very much to himself. Quite unlike a certain Fräulein Gisela, who much to Dick's dislike seems to have set her cap upon Ralf. All is happily resolved when it turns out that Gisela is Westkamp's secretary. Westkamp offers a contract to Jochen and a job to Ralf, and from now on, the Immenhof never has to go without guests anymore.

The story is set around 1956, two years later than the first movie. What was menacing then has become bitter truth: The Immenhof has been closed by officials, awaiting auction. In the meantime, Angela has died, so Jochen is now a widower. Oma Jantzen and Angela's younger sisters Dick and Dalli live with him in the forester's house. In order to save the manor house, Dalli has started a "pony circus" with the village children in the barn, while Dick has given up hope of Ethelbert ever returning - he hasn't written in over a year. Little does she know that he is already on the way, bringing his university friend Ralf into the mix. When Ethelbert learns from Dalli that Dick and Ralf are getting much better acquainted than he was bargaining for (we're talking about getting to first name basis here, it's the 1950s), and he also learns of the trouble the Immenhof is in, he secretly gets his rich uncle Pankraz and his beautiful daughter Margot to the forester's house. After a lot of pranks the ponies and Dalli's gang of would-be cowboys play on Pankraz, he finally caves in, saves the Immenhof and allows his daughter to marry Jochen. Dick is now expecting letters from Ralf, and Ethelbert may or may not transfer his attentions to Dalli.

After their flight from East Prussia following WW II, the orphaned sisters Angela, Barbara (nicknamed Dick) and Brigitte (Dalli) have settled with their grandmother Jantzen near Eutin in Schleswig-Holstein. The Jantzens have been owning the 18th century manor house "Immenhof" for over a 100 years, breeding and selling ponies. Only recently, Jochen von Roth has returned from POW camp and is now trying to establish a stud farm in the old forester's house about 5 kilometers from the manor house. Both Oma Jantzen and von Roth are struggling with finances. Owing to debt, Jantzen may have to face the auctioning off of all her possessions. Into this situation arrives Ethelbert, the sisters' posh cousin from the big city (we never learn which). He is making quite a fool of himself in his red and white riding dress, falling off ponies and into traps, but Dick feels drawn to him nevertheless. Romance is also blossoming between Angela and Jochen von Roth. Helped along by a thunderstorm and the cash of a horse buyer, everything resolves happily, with Jochen proposing to Angela and Ethelbert promising to write ever so often.

GDR and West Berlin in the 1950s. Hans Nettermann, a designer at the "Komet" bicycle factory, is a favorite of the BSG road riders. His dream is to one day ride in a stand-up race. A construction error throws him back in the road race. They work for a long time to fix it. Then he is persuaded to go to West Berlin to become a professional rider. Although he makes it to the top class, he also learns about the scams in professional sport. He marries Marianne, who has followed him and tries to persuade him to return to the GDR, which he eventually does. After some difficulties at work, he is nominated for the first amateur endurance race in the GDR and wins.
