Переосмисливши прожите життя, заспокоєний і умиротворений, він згадує свою молодість, яка відбулася у постійному прагненні до збагачення. Починаючи свій шлях з роздрібної торгівлі, він стає офіціантом, змінюючи за допомогою протекції свого нового знайомого скромну пивну на фешенебельний ресторан. Одруження на етнічної німкені дозволило знайти роботу і після гітлерівської окупації. В кінці війни Ліза привезла колекцію рідкісних поштових марок, зібрану нею в будинках виселених євреїв. Продаж марок, отриманих таким шляхом, дозволила Яну стати мільйонером і власником готелю.
