Одного разу симпатичний молодий англієць Безіл отримав в спадок досить великий шматок такої дорогоцінної на острові Кріт землі, та на додачу ще і шахту. І тим самим вступив в конфлікт з жорстокими вдачами аборигенів. Здавалося вже, що йому ніколи не вдасться досягти компромісу з ними, але доля послала йому нагороду - дружбу з місцевим греком Зорбой, який через свій позитивний темперамент і доброту потихеньку починає вирішувати всі проблеми британця.
