Beside one of the more chilling murder scenes for that era, the film has a three part flashback, which takes the viewer from a cityscape and menacing oil wells to the snow-covered plains of Wyoming and back to the streets of Hollywood. The interplay of high contrast images makes it worth seeing, but the story keeps the viewer engaged.

Відомий зломник Док Ріденшнайдер виходить з в'язниці з готовим блискучим планом багатомільйонної крадіжки зі зломом. Він набирає групу професіоналів, а реалізувати товар планує через лихваря Еммеріха. Свої злочинні справи той успішно поєднує з охмуренням молоденької коханки, яка чекає від нього занадто багато. Для кожного в бригаді це пограбування мало стати межею, після якої почалося б нове, солодке життя. Спочатку все йде як по маслу, але трагічний збіг обставин змушує ґанґстерів боротися вже не за гроші, а за життя.
