A comedy of errors in which the sweetly incompetent Dr. Pietro Vignali (de Sica) has been run deep into debt by his girlfriend, Loletta Prima (Magnani). E chi resta in città : Ercole che fa il vigile urbano, in attesa delle carte per sposare la fidanzata incinta e licenziata per questo dai padroni; Roberto che trova cattive compagnie e si inguaia. Così si dipana una serie di storie parallele, tristi o allegre, e la sera, passata la domenica d'agosto, alcune cose anche importanti, saranno cambiate.
