Молоді офіцери в перший день німецько-радянської війни виявилися під обстрілом гітлерівців. Двічі потрапляючи в полон, їм удається двічі з нього бігти. Повертаючись в тил, один з офіцерів, Віктор, в поїзді знайомиться з випадковим попутником. Поїзд бомблять — Віктор контужений, а його новий знайомий гине, передавши перед смертю лист для своєї дочки, яку він не бачив багато років.Після контузії в госпіталі, герой знаходить адресата листа — красуню-доньку його випадкового знайомого, між ними виникає взаємна симпатія, а потім і глибші відчуття. Але наступного ж дня після весілля, Віктора заарештовують. По помилковому звинуваченню — він потрапляє в штрафбат, а молода дружина вирушає в школу радисток для того, щоб, можливо, знайти свого чоловіка на фронт
