Цар Йосія вирішив очистити свою землю від язичницьких культів, винищуючи капища Ваала і Астарти. В цей час Єремія, покликаний на вище пророче служіння, словом і ділом підтримував царя. Після смерті Йосії почався релігійний розбрат і політична смута. Народ перестав вірити пророцтвам Єремії, і сам він, як порушник громадського порядку, піддавався гонінням...З самого дитинства Єремія, який ріс в сім'ї священика в селі Анафофі близько Єрусалиму, відчував себе «обранцем Господнім», хоча до його слів ніхто не дослухався, а навпаки, він піддавався звинуваченням у богохульстві і навіть фізичним нападам.
