The fake private detective Mike Spillone is hired by two old ladies to find out if Brigitte, the wife of their nephew Otello Bellomo, has a lover. Brigitte is a physician but the two aunts are unaware of the fact. While investigating, Mike and his assistant Johnny discover Brigitte with a prospective patient, the marquis De Vitti who was shot by the husband of the woman he tried to seduce. Afterwards Spillone finds her with her husband who he believes to be her lover.

When the swindler La Spada and his accomplice José come out of jail in Madrid, they decide to pull a really great swindle: nothing less than to discover and sell a third picture of the famous Goya's Maya, the^ÔMaya in camisòn^Ô (Maya with a night-gown). They engage the renowed Scorcelletti who can imitate any picture and who lives in Rome. Afterwards, with the help of the beautiful Eva, they convince the celebrated art critic Francisco Montiel of the existance of a third Maya and let him find the picture. When the swindlers are on the point of selling the faked maya to an American millionaire, Scorcelli comes back from Rome to sell one of his six other maya pictures.

Aristide Paoloni salva dal Tevere dove si era gettato Gennaro Vaccariello. Il fatto gli torna comodo anche perchè le elezioni sono vicine. Ma il giorno dopo il salvataggio Gennaro si presenta a casa sua e gli chiede di essere ospitato: Aristide gli ha ridato la vita ed ora questa vita é una sua responsabilità . Sempre per via delle elezioni Paoloni accetta e così Vaccariello si installa a casa del commedatore portando con sè i sei figli e uno zio a carico. Tra suo figlio maggiore, Raffaele, e la figlia di Aristide, Irene si instaura un rapporto di odio-amore e la situazione in casa si fa sempre più insostenibile. Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Antonio Capurro, un ladruncolo travestito da prete, viene arrestato dal maresciallo Cottone. In seguito, durante un bombardamento il lestofante riesce a impossessarsi della divisa del poliziotto, lasciandogli l'abito talare. Inizia così una serie di comiche disavventure per i due, che devono eludere i nazi-fascisti che occupano il paese e nascondere i soldati alleati che stanno arrivando di nascosto. Alla fine, il paese verrà liberato ed Antonio sfuggirà ancora una volta al poliziotto.
