Ben, our main character, wakes up in an unusual hospital after seemingly landing on an asphalt road due to a car collision. He later wakes up to the sound of dog barking and decides to explore the hospital. After he studies the hospital, noticing all the details from the plain white hallways from the surgical tools spread about the rooms, he realizes this isn't a normal hospital. He then hears footsteps and goes into the nearest room where he finds an experimental patient. The patient, lying on a bed moaning, comes to life in a horrific manner and leaves our main character, Ben, running for his life through the hospital while being chased by surgeons along the way. Ben realizes that the only chance of survival is leaving the Hospital with haste. Run Ben, Run.

Adam explains his cousin's wayward left arm, his strong right one, his aunt's understanding of her son's rages ("bake a cake," she'd tell him), and the boy's love of swimming. On Adam's eighth birthday, the cousins are separated by tragedy; it's left to Adam to wonder about his cousin, and if he still smells of licorice.

The chance discovery of an abandoned dirigible leads Jasper through unchartered waters to an island on which lives a terrifying creature that may be the cure for the Plague. A page of a newspaper blows into his face; it's overcast and begins to rain; a dog barks viciously. He boards a bus and sits in back, puts on headphones and continues reading, noticing a goldfish in water inside a knotted plastic bag beside him. The fish proves to be no ordinary one, especially when the bookish lad turns on his tape player. As the otherwise empty bus speeds through the rain, will our worm, armed only with his umbrella, survive? Is he a quick enough learner?

He peels the paper off a chocolate and sets it on the dash near her hand. She takes it. He sets out another; soon she softens, then, she folds down the visor. Has Jack made things right again? And the tuffet?
