Дія фільму розвертається відразу після Першої світової війни. Майор французької армії Делаплан поставив перед собою благородну і практично нездійсненну задачу: допомогти родичам тих, хто пропав без вісті під час війни, розшукати зниклих - всіх, близько 350 000 чоловік.У ході пошуків він знайомиться з молодою багатою парижанкою Ірен, що безуспішно розшукує зниклого чоловіка. Спочатку між ними виникає взаємна неприязнь, але незабаром рішучість і мужність майора примушує Ірен переглянути своє ставлення до нього.
