У місті Батертауні править підступна володарка Ентіті. Для зміцнення своєї влади вона намагається використовувати Макса, неперевершеного майстра дорожніх сутичок. Але тепер заворожливу низку автомобільних розбірок під жорстоким сонцем починають змінювати неймовірні рукопашні бої. А закони арени «купола грому» надзвичайно жорстокі: виходять двоє, залишається тільки один... А потім, подібно Моісею, Макс повинен вивести з пустелі... банди волоцюг-дітей, щоб вони поклали початок більш гуманній цивілізації, ніж та, що виродилася після ядерного апокаліпсиса третьої світової війни. І на зміну безглуздій помсті приходить особиста відповідальність зрілої людини.

Після виснажливої подорожі, вона зустрічає Мікеле, сина місцевого фермера, у якого закохується юна Розетта, а він закохується у Чезіру. Минають дні, поступово містечко наповнюється біженцями, бомбардування посилюються, а продуктів стає дедалі менше. На заїжджому дворі він зустрічає танцівницю Сіту, що їде туди ж, щоб виконати в храмі танець у славу богів. Почувши, що поблизу бродить тигр-людожер, вони вирішують їхати разом. І не даремно: під час привалу тигр нападає на молоду жінку, проте Гаральд рятує її, відлякавши звіра запаленою гілкою. Прибувши до Ешнапура, архітектор зустрічається з правителем Чандрою, який навчався у Європі, і приступає до роботи.
