Nallasivam (Kamal Haasan) and Anbarasu (Madhavan) are drawn together by the strings of fate after they come into contact at the Bhuvaneshwar airport. Anbarasu is an advertisement director, while Nallasivam is a trade unionist. Fate entwines their travel plans, and they end up travelling to Chennai together. In the course of their journey, Anbarasu, born with a golden spoon, is touched by the realities of the sufferings of a normal human being when he witnesses the dead and the injured during a train accident, and he volunteers to donate his blood, which is of a very rare group, despite his fear of blood. The flashback of Nallasivam is recounted during one of their journeys. Nallasivam is a communist trade unionist, who fights for higher wages for his comrades. By chance, he falls in love with the daughter Bala (Kiran) of a rich industrialist, Bala's father, Padaiyacchi (Nasser). Due to the opposition, they plan to elope and get married, but unfortunately, Nallasivam meets with an accident which disfigures him. He is told by Padaiyacchi that Bala is married, so he pursues his communist agenda, during the course of which he meets Anbarasu. Anbarasu is drawn to Nallasivam in the end, and claims him as his adopted brother, and requests Nallasivam to come to his wedding. At the wedding hall, Nalla discovers the bride to be is none other than his sweetheart, Bala. When Padaiyacchi discovers him at the hall, he is in a panic, and pleads for him to leave. Santhana Bharathy as Padaiyacchi's henchman plays out a sentimental scene in the end. The movie is more of a parallel cinema, with Kamal and Madhavan acting their roles to stellar efficiency. Kiran appears in a very small role, to the disappointment of many.

At first, Walter's antics draw laughter and ridicule from the crowd, but soon they begin to appreciate the honesty of his emotions and Surya shows his appreciation by hugging Walter and wishing him a great future. This incident changes Saamy's opinion of Walter and in an inebriated state he confesses to Highness that he actually likes Walter and that any ill-feelings he has had are totally misplaced. The brothers unite and this makes both Highness and the two mothers happy. Meanwhile, Arya brings Thenmozhi home and tells Higness that he wants to marry her. But Walter interjects and destroys the moment by revealing that Thenmozhi is the daughter of a long-standing enemy of Highness. Saamy is enraged and runs off at the mouth, accusing Highness of using his old grudge to gain control over him and his love. Heart-broken, Highness takes to the bottle. Saamy leaves saying that he cannot let Thenmozhi go just like that. Later, Highness reconciles and permits Saamy to marry Thenmozhi. Now, R.K, a local goon who smuggles cattle to Kerala is busted by Highness and is arrested amongst much media fare. Soon, he returns to rent his wrath upon Highness - kidnapping him from his home at night, RK strips Highness naked and flogs him to unconsciousness. In the morning, Highness is found dead, hanging from a tree by the lake. The brothers are devastated, Saamy rushes to engage R.K in a fist cuff but is brutally beaten down. But Walter returns with a vengeance and bashes R.K to pulp, his emotion running high he beats R.K so badly that the smuggler begs Walter to kill him. Walter has other plans - he ties R.K to Highness's funeral pyre and allows him to burn while still alive. The credits roll as the two brothers, both heavily drunk, walk toward the camera dancing and yelling.

Upon his release, he is looked after by a woman named Namrata, whose honor he had saved from the British - who had captured two truckloads of women protesters, burned their clothing, and forced them to commit suicide. Namrata and Senapathy marry, India gains independence, and they soon have two children - Chandrabose and Kasthoori. Years later Chandra quarrels with his honest and straight-laced father, leaves home, so that he can earn enough money to bribe the transport secretary to get him a job as a Transport Officer. Tragedy strikes the family when Kasthoori is grievously hurt in a house-fire. They get her to the nearest hospital - but the doctor wants them to file a police report or pay him Rs.500/-; At the police station - the Inspector wants Rs.250/- or a report from the Village Administration Officer; who in turn wants Rs.150/- so that he can start preparations for the report. This delay results in Kasthoori's death - and a vengeful Senapathy decides to teach corrupt officials a lesson - a lesson that will serve to remind other corrupt officials to do their work diligently without accepting any bribes. What Senapathy does not know is that his very son Chandra is now part of this system - and he must now make up his mind to make an exception or carry on his gruesome task - knowing fully well that the Central Bureau of Investigation is hot on his tail.

The movie revolves around Arunachalam (Rajini), who is the son of the VIP of a village who finds out about his past but destiny has its own play.

Shiva and Deva (Ajith) are twins who are heirs to a massive industrial empire. Deva the older, more responsible brother, is a brilliant industrialist, but also deaf mute. Shiva woos Priya (Simran) by inventing a tragic love story. She falls for him, they get married. Priya, coincidentally, was also the girl Deva was interested in, but never got around to expressing his liking to. The new bride finds an inconvenient tension once she moves in with the two brothers. The title reflects the tale from the Ramayana epic, in which Vaali, the elder twin of Sugreeva, fell in love with his younger brother's wife.
