У серпні 1952 року родину британських туристів знаходять жорстоко вбитою на узбіччі дороги у Верхньому Провансі. Під час подальшого публічного розслідування місцевого землевласника, 75-річного Гастона Домінічі, заарештовують за вбивства після того, як на нього донесли його сини. In the camp, people begin to think that the maquis has been betrayed.

When political thugs murder an opponent's volunteer and also kill a cop, chief inspector Verjeat believes the politician who hired them is as guilty as the murderous goon.
