Two young Indians, Meena and Rajesh, meet in Europe and fall in love with each other, promising to get married when they return back to India. Naseeb, a story of destiny and fate, begins with a lottery ticket. A drunk who cannot pay his tab trades his 'winning' ticket to the waiter, Namdev (Pran), instead. Namdev decides to share this ticket with his three friends Damu (Amjad Khan), Raghu (Kader Khan) and Jaggi (Jagdish Raj). But when it turns out to actually be a winner, Damu and Ragu turn on the other two, murdering Jaggi and framing Namdev. Namdev goes on the run but Raghu and Damu intervene and throw him over a bridge into a river and Namdev is presumed dead. However he is rescued by a don (Amrish Puri) but no one is aware he is alive. Fast forward to ten years later - Damu and Raghu have used their stolen lottery money to build a fabulous hotel and make millions becoming very successful businessmen. Damu has used a share of his money to send his only son, Vicky (Shatrughan Sinha) to school in England. They have even employed Namdev's oldest son Johnny (Amitabh Bachchan), Vicky's best friend, as a waiter in the hotel. By coincidence (or by fate!) Johnny and Vicky who are the best of friends fall in love with the same beautiful singer, Miss Asha (Hema Malini). Julie (Reena Roy) is a childhood friend of Vicky's who is in love with Vicky, but he only sees her as a friend. When Johnny discovers this, he and Julie sacrifice their own love to ensure that Vicky and Asha get together. At the same time, John's younger brother Sunny (Rishi Kapoor) has fallen for Asha's younger sister, Kim (Kim). Kim and Asha also happen to be the daughters of Jaggi, the man Namdev supposedly murdered. Namdev returns soon after and plans to take revenge against Damu and Raghu for separating him from his two sons Johnny and Sunny. The lives of all these characters become inter wined and Naseeb becomes a poignant story about love, friendship, sacrifice, deceit, revenge and above all, destiny.

Revealing while "on camera" that this man and his partners have been destroying everything in pursuit of their goals, Joshi declares that he killed the man in revenge, almost without thinking. "If that is terrorism, I'm a terrorist", he concludes. Later, Joshi is put into prison and sentenced to death. On the day of his execution, the reporters and general public lead a silent march, flying the national flag of India, to find Joshi and to expose the truth. He is freed, and justice is secured.

After completing his studies in London, England, Shakti Thakur returns home to India in a small town where his family resides. Accompanying him is his leggy girlfriend, Anita, who he is in love with and wants to marry, much to the disapproval of his family. After a few days, Shakti starts to feel that nothing much has changed in this part of India and longs to return, as he is unable to bear the animosity between the townspeople, in general, and in particular between his Zamindar dad, Raja Thakur, and rival Zamindar Birju, none other than Raja's crippled brother. When Anita leaves the town to meet her parents elsewhere in India, Shakti too wants to follow her, but his plans change suddenly when his father passes away, and the region is ravaged by unprecedented natural calamities. Following the funeral he decides to stay on to look after the family estate and business temporarily, and that is when he meets local town belle, Gehna, who has given her heart to him years ago, hopes to marry him, with approval from his very own family. Anita returns to find that nothing is the same anymore, and that her role may be reduced to that of a mistress, she must now make a choice to either return back home, or fight and win back Shakti's love.
