Колишній капітан корабля, удівець і батько сімох дітей, барон фон Трапп, проживає у своєму маєтку під Зальцбурґом. У будинку панує армійська дисципліна і порядок, але сім дітей це все-таки забагато і тому барон наймає гувернантку. Усе змінюється, коли у будинку з'являється дівчина Марія, вона вчить дітей співати, танцювати і поблажливіше ставитись до забаганок їхнього батька.
Сюжет

Hubert Gerold, the new forester of the Silver Forest, fights against the deforestation of his idyllic forest with the help of the court councilor. He actually succeeds in convincing the local council to sell building land instead of the forest. When Hubert meets Liesl, the court councilor's granddaughter, at a hunters' ball, his happiness seems complete. But while he is showing her the beauties of the Silver Forest, Liesl's admirer, Max, arrives from Vienna, determined to prevent their relationship at all costs.

Повсякденні справи та монотонність життя спіткає родину на рішення переїзду до Австралії. Георг повідомляє батькам про те, що вони з дружиною кинули роботи заради зміни місця проживання. Пара для себе знайшла шлях порятунку.

Austria, a little farming valley. Beginning of the century. When one of the farmers is found murdered one day, his labourers know of nothing, but are relieved, as the tyranny has ended. Then, something new happens for the first time in history: The farm workers inherit the whole farm together, as the farmer himself was childless. Now, conflicts come up, as nobody is the boss and nobody has to obey.
