Її сестра Соул (Дуеньяс) працює перукарем. Матір Раймунди (Маура) гине у полум’ї разом з чоловіком, а потім повертається у вигляді привида. Стрічка здобула два призи Каннського кінофестивалю – за найкращий сценарій (Альмодовар) і найкращу жіночу роль (вручено всьому жіночому акторському ансамблю). Альмодовар вважає, що його картина руйнує стереотип “чорної Іспанії” і відкриває справжнє обличчя цієї країни. Деякі критики вважають, що “Повернення” займає у творчості режисера таке ж місце, як “Амаркорд” у Фелліні. Для зйомок Альмодовар повернувся у Ла Манча, де народився.
