Industrial music emerged in the mid 70's, providing a vibrant, provocative and artistic soundtrack to the picket lines, economic decline and cultural oppression of the era. Whether factory workers, students or unemployed, industrial music pioneers were all educated, artistically minded and politically aware artists who started with little to no musical background and went on to change musical history. Industrial musicians found inspiration in Krautrock bands Kraftwerk, Faust and Can, 20th century art movements Dada, Futurism and Surrealism and post-modern writers William Burroughs, Brion Gysin and J.G. Ballard. Mixing the do-it-yourself attitude of punk with mail art and underground fanzines, these pioneers were among the first bands to incorporate tape loops, homemade synthesisers, factory field recordings and cut-up techniques in their music. Discover the personal story of industrial music founders Throbbing Gristle, Sheffield's prolific Dada inspired band Cabaret Voltaire, award-winning soundtrack composer Graeme Revell of SPK, noise music inventor Boyd Rice of NON and fifteen other of the genre's most influential figures, exposing their incredible stories for the first time on film.

A little boy Anatole lives in 1960s in the steppe in Kazakhstan with his parents-archaeologists. One day he witnesses the accidental death of his brother, this drama traumatizes the boy so much that he loses his ability to speak. Once he meets an old Kazakh who will teach him to hear again the world around him and will teach him how to speak again. The whole life of Anatole depends from now on from his ability to hear. His ear connects him to the world. 50 years later, the steppe calls him again.

From pagan re-enactors to failed communes, black metal festivals to Arctic hermits, and the forever Golden Hour to the Northern Lights, 'A Spell to Ward off the Darkness' is an inquiry into the possibilities of a spiritual existence within an increasingly secular Western culture. A participatory ethnography in the best possible sense, A SPELL choreographs the actions of non-actors within existing Scandinavian landscapes in an effort to arrive at a hybrid document of the past, present, and future; it is a record of experience that proposes belief in transcendence as a viable outcome of living in the now.
