Іван Дзюба народився 1931 року на Донбасі. Вчений, дослідник літератури, публіцист, письменник, знана постать покоління шістдесятників. Він першим публічно звинуватив комуністичний режим у переслідуваннях та арештах українських інтелектуалів/-ок — письменників/-ць, вчених, художників/-ць, композиторів/-ок. Це сталося на премʼєрі фільму «Тіні забутих предків» 4 вересня 1965 року. Його робота «Інтернаціоналізм чи русифікація» була визнана владою як антирадянська. Івана Дзюбу заарештували. І півтора роки він перебував у слідчому ізоляторі КДБ.Марта Дзюба, дружина Івана — львівʼянка. Вони прожили довге тривожне, сповнене драматичних подій, але щасливе життя. Марта стала його ангелом-охоронцем і присвятила себе чоловікові, допомагаючи йому, оберігаючи його.
Їхню історію ми почуємо з вуст Марти, а Івана бачитимемо лише час від часу. Контрапунктом фільму стає день народження Івана Михайловича — 90-річний ювілей, на який зібралися найближчі йому люди.
