Карел і Божена — бездітна сімейна пара. Одного разу Карел приносить додому шматок дерева, який після невеликого доопрацювання стає схожим на маленького чоловічка. Але, на його здивування, Божена ставиться до цього поліна цурки, як до своєї дитини. А «дитина» незабаром починає подавати ознаки життя.

Лабіринти вулиць приводять його на покинуте горище, де він знаходить старовинний ляльковий театр і «Фауста» Ґьоте посередині кімнати. Він приміряє костюм Фауста і вживається в його образ.
