11-річна Кораліна Джонс разом із батьками переїжджає до іншого штату. Дівчинка нудьгує – друзі її залишилися у рідному Мічигані, а батьки постійно працюють і лише гримають на неї. Тож вона намагається розважати себе, як може. Тато радить їй походити по будинку і порахувати всі двері і вікна. І чисто випадково дівчинка знаходить маленькі потаємні дверцята, за якими заховано інший світ – світ, де дім ошатний, їжа смачна, а батьки привітні й веселі. Все б наче нічого, але для того, щоб їй залишитися в цьому «ідеальному» світі, Інша Мама вимагає пришити ґудзики замість очей…Паралельний світ, який, як виявляє головна героїня, являє собою один лише будинок та сад біля нього, створила зла відьма. Проте, так і не стає до кінця зрозумілим, навіщо. Діти-привиди, яких Кораліна зустрічає, перебуваючи за дзеркалом – у такій собі клітці, куди відьма кинула її за погану поведінку, - розповідають їй, що відьма з’їла їхні життя і просять врятувати їхні душі. Дівчинка починає розуміти, що в небезпеці не тільки вона, а і її близькі.
