Спокійне життя паризького п'янички Жужу (П'єр Брассер) та його друга — гітариста на прізвисько «Артист» (Жорж Брасанс) різко змінюється, коли в кварталі з'являється озброєний злочинець П'єр Барб'є (Анрі Відаль). Друзі вважають, що неморально здати хворого злочинця поліції і ховають його у підвалі будинку «Артиста». Як віддячить друзям за надану допомогу врятований злочинець?

Сюжет фільму побудований на ідеях французького ученого-медика і філософа Анрі Лаборі, який сам озвучує їх у фільмі. Три людські долі покликані проілюструвати ідеї Лаборі про зв'язок людської психології і суспільства. На прикладі трьох персонажів учений доводить, що всі людські реакції обумовлені умовами, в яких пройшло їхнє дитинство.

Правда потім з'ясовується, що ця циганка насправді — Аделіна, дочка вербувальника- сержанта Лафраншиза, заманює таким чином нових рекрутів. Зрозумівши це, Фанфан не відступає від своєї мрії і відправляється на війну...

Фільм про те, що означає бути аристократом, чого хоче жінка і про умовності, в яких ми живемо. Коли комедія з’явилася на екрани в 1939 році, кінотеатр, у якому вона йшла, ледь не спалили. Заборонена під час німецької окупації, як деморалізуюча. Лише в 1965 потрапила на екрани у повному, нецензурованому вигляді.
