Фільм "Іспанська земля" знятий за сценарієм і із закадровим коментарем Ернеста Хемінгуея, який тоді знаходився в Іспанії як військовий кореспондент. Вважаючи своїм обов'язком не лише розповісти, але і показати американській громадськості, які випробування і які звірства твердо виносять іспанці заради перемоги Республіки, (тому, "Іспанська земля" - унікальний пропагандистський документальний фільм, зроблений на користь республіканців) як народ своєю мирною працею підтримує її, Івенс і Хемінгуей з головою йдуть в зйомку цього фільму.У важкій і небезпечній бойовій ситуації Івенс знімає епізоди боїв за Університетське містечко, бомбардування Мадриду. У травні 1937 р. Хемінгуей повіз плівку в США. Йому вдалося показати фільм в Білому Домі президентові Рузвельту. Він добився випуску його в прокат, фільм приніс велику суму до фонду допомоги Іспанії.

After a look at some strange creatures, the narrator and camera take us to the Chaco forest, on the borders of Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil, where a vampire bat lives, desmodus rotondus, attacking wildlife and domesticated creatures, killing small ones by draining all their blood and killing large ones by leaving a parasite in their bloodstream. Four inches long, with a 12-inch wingspread, we see it walk, approach a victim, pull out a patch of fur large enough for it to engage its teeth, then lap six or seven ounces of blood. Its saliva may be an anesthetic keeping its victims from waking. A stub nose and harelip contribute to its efficiency and its hideous look.

Psychological narrative avantgarde film about a wealthy young businessman who consecutively falls in love with a classy English woman (Pearl), a Russian sculptress (Athalia), and a naive working-class girl (Lucie). Overpowered by weakness, the coward sidesteps the obligations that love affairs impose: rather than living up to his dates he takes his sports-car from an ultra-modern garage and speeds to the fashionable beaches of Deauville. On his way, he is fatally hit by a descending swallow. The film is divided into three segments each of which consists of events the woman experienced. These sequences are embedded in scenes in which each of the three women is telling and casting her mind back to her own love affair. Thus, present, future and past merge and cannot be distinguished clearly. The intertwinement of several layers of time experience, recollection, telling and showing have been regarded as a source of inspiration of Alain Resnais and this film prefigures his "L'Année dernière à Mariënbad" to a certain extent.
